Your Takeaways
It is important to take this chapter to heart because it is so easy to get discouraged and lose interest in pursuing your creative photographic vision. Whether you think that there’s nothing around you worth photographing or you lose excitement in an area because things don’t go according to plan, it’s critical to remember that the very spirit of creativity lies in its pursuit and that there are so many paths you can take to find it. Create a list of alternative shooting methods, like using ND filters in broad daylight or applying colored filters onto your lens, to help bolster those creative juices when things don’t seem to go right.
Another thing I recommend is to use more unorthodox gear, like an infrared-converted camera or a novelty lens such as a Lensbaby, and walk around your neighborhood. Leave all expectations at the door and simply put the camera to your face. You may surprise yourself by what you discover when you look at things differently than you’re used to.
It’s also worth nothing that there are all sorts of things you can do to spur creativity beyond using different camera gear. On my trip to Rome, it wasn’t the gear that inspired me, it was the process of taking myself away from the scene, clearing my head, and focusing on researching the area to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of it. Well, that and the amazing caffeinating powers of an espresso. And what about the indifference that began to set in with my dog walks? All I did to rejigger my creative approach there was to change up the time of day and the way we took the route. What’s important is to remind yourself that creative inspiration doesn’t always have to come in the form of tremendous leaps and bounds. If you open your mind to it, even the smallest changes can have a huge impact.
